Denise Williams
More Than Just Numbers
For a company that has never advertised during its six-year existence, The Small Business Accountants Ltd. continues to grow its list of clientele. The reason? The Calgary-based company’s appropriate tag line contains an essential truth about its guiding philosophy and how it treats its clients – ‘More than just the numbers.’

Loyal business owners and individuals realize that owner Denise Williams and her staff of 11 care for their customers as if they were family. Often organizational miracles are worked from a pile of receipts wrapped in a rubber band.

Cost-saving measures are derived from simple data entry where staff search for solutions that benefit the customer. No client is too small or task too large for this multi-talented company.

“I enjoy organizing people and businesses,” said Denise who has 20 years experience in bookkeeping and accounting. “We’ve sorted through boxes, straightened out receipts, and organized the financials into a routine that restores our client’s sense of control and peace of mind. Teaching someone how to crawl, walk and then run with their business gives us a personal satisfaction like no other.”

Record keeping, cost analysis, boardroom rental, tax returns and business plans, are only a small sample of the back office services offered by The Small Business Accountants Ltd. The company also helps businesses hire employees, write letters, and conduct cash flow reports.

From large oil and gas corporations to franchisees, small business owners and individuals, Denise’s clients number nearly 300 strong and continue to grow at a smooth and steady pace.

The Small Business Accountants Ltd. was on the move early in the new year as it moved from it’s original “home based” roots to a professional but comfortable office space in McKenzie Towne to meet its own business growth.

“We try to grow with our clients,” said Denise who intends to use her feet to commute to the new work address. “There is nothing more gratifying than supporting individuals in reaching their business goals.”

The bookkeeping bug took hold of Denise early in her life. As a young girl, and a third generation member of the 4H service club (Heart, Health, Hand, Head), Denise was awarded the most organized and accurate bookkeeper in her club.

She knew then, just as she knows now, that running a clean organized set of books makes all the difference in running a smooth operation. “Raising a calf to auction taught me a lot about business, among other things.”

Denise acquired a Business Administration diploma and completed accountancy courses while working in various accounting positions, including Controller for a family owned Oil and Gas Service Company, before going solo in 2001.

Married, with a blended family that includes six children, Denise proudly displays an entrepreneurial attitude evident in many Alberta business owners. But she never forgets her community roots.

Denise had recently spent 2 years as a volunteer for Calgary Community Support for Young Parents. Denise and her husband are also dedicated Plasma Donors for Canadian Blood Services.

Looking to a bright future, Denise wants to share her hard earned business knowledge. She plans to train people who have experienced hardship and want to build a better life for themselves and their families. Acquiring office skills and slowly re-joining the work force builds self-esteem, she asserts.

“Call me a New Age accountant,” she said, smiling.
